Sing, sing a song, make it simple...

My life has had some interesting twists and turns, and like most people I've sometimes been unsure what direction to take.

However, there are two things I've always known I wanted to do. The first was to have children. (I hit the jackpot there!) The second was to sing.

My love of singing and performance has matured to a devotion to music ministry. What a joy it is to be able to fill a church with song, to lead people in singing praises, and to proclaim the word of God through the psalm during Mass. When someone comes up to me and tells me I helped them through my music, I know I am right where I'm supposed to be, doing what I was meant to do.

And now, my two joys are merging. The kids love to sing.

Liliana has a lovely voice, and very good pitch. She is also a bit of a Diva; often telling me to be quiet so she can sing by herself. She is not the least bit impressed that people sometimes pay me to sing.

Joseph, who rarely strings two words together in speech loves to sing, "Rain rain, go away!" in his sweet sing-song voice, delivered with a big smile.

Eve loves to sing along to music, both the lyrics AND the instrumental parts!

Faith insists on playing the Sound of Music CD for every car ride. If it isn't on right away I hear, "Mommy! Sound o' Oosic!" She likes me to start with the first track which is an instrumental montage. She knows many of the songs so well that she sings the words along to the instrumental.

I think the Barrett's favorite Sound of Music song is "Do a Deer". At the end, Julie Andrews hits a very high note, and Liliana can match it!

Last Friday I brought Liliana and Faith to Mass at St. Mary Church. I was astounded by Faith's singing. Because I'm usually leading the music and not sitting with the kids I had no idea how much she participated. The songs she didn't know, she tried to sing along with and match the pitches. She knew the Mass parts, singing loud and clear, "A-le-lu-ia!" How cute is that?

A special treat is the Barrett Family version of "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes". Everyone sings and points to the body parts, with each redition followed by everyone shouting,"FASTER!" Once we've gotten as fast as we can, we change to animal noises.

"Like a CAT!"

"Meow, meow, meow meow meow meow meow, meow meow meow...."

"Like a DOG!"

"Woof, woof, woof woof woof woof woof, woof woof woof..."

Who needs a college fund? The Barrett Family Singers, coming to a concert hall near you in 2015!

I'll never forget that time at the Science Museum in Boston when we were waiting for that elevator and we sang Head Shoulders Knees and Toes right in the hallway and we did to every animal possible! It was suprisingly REALLY fun!!!!!! Then the time when Joe was singing Rain Rain go Away in the car when I said it looked like it was going to rain! TO CUTE!!!! No wonder the kids have a musical ear, they have you as a rolemodel mother!!!!
Say Hi to everyone for me and tell them that I am humming the Sound of Music as I type.

I will never forget when they all were in high chairs having breakfast on a sunday morning when Mommy was getting ready for church and Jim would get out his guitar and play for them as they ate(or moved food around on the plate). Even when they were very small it would have a calming effect, especially on Joe. And Eve would wiggle to the music in her chair.
There was cereal everywhere but there was music also. And Daddy Jim and his guitar. Grammy
