Sleep.....or lack thereof.....

I honestly can't remember when I last slept through the night, in my bed. Why? Well, there are four reasons, and their names are Liliana, Joseph, Eve, and Faith. It only takes one issue with one child, and that's if we're lucky enough to have only one up.

Liliana has always woken in the night. I was the weak link when she was a baby. I couldn't stand listening to her cry. I spent many hours holding her in her rocking chair, and in some ways I miss that. I think Lili does too, because she gets up sometime between 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. to find me. Sometimes I'm in bed. Occasionally she slips into bed without waking me, but most of the time she wakes me up to fix the covers over her. Most nights I am not in bed yet. We've given up trying to get her back into her bed because she will cry and wake everyone up. Anyway, we have a king size bed, so there's room, and it means I get to go to sleep instead of dealing with a cranky child. Of course, I like to shower at night, and my friend Lili insists on being with me. So, her routine is to grab a pillow from her bed and curl up on the bathroom floor until I'm ready for bed.

It is a small bathroom, so maneuvering around her can be tricky.

Joseph is currently getting 3 molars at once, and I'm pretty sure Eve is cutting at least one. Faith? Well, Faith is just a whole other story.

Let's just say it is a good thing that she is cute. She had some sort of a viral rash and during that illness we let her sleep in our bed a few nights. We weren't sure how much of this was behavioral, but the doctor assured us she wasn't feeling well. By the time we thought she was feeling better, the routine had been established. She has slept in our bed every night for the past two weeks. It wouldn't be an issue if she would be still, but she flails. One night when Joe's mouth was really hurting we ended up with him in the bed too. Everyone wants Mommy, so I had Faith on one side (Lili beside her) and Joe on the other. Both wanted to be on top of Mommy so they kept pushing each other. At one point Joe realized that Faith had her Elmo with her and I hear his little voice say, "Elmo!" To which Faith quickly replied, "MY ELMO!" That made me giggle.

On top of the restless sleeping, I think the new foods she has been eating are giving her painful gas. She writhes and whines and toots. Sometimes she falls right off the bed. Other times I resort to bringing her downstairs so Jim can get a little sleep. Here we are in our favorite corner of the couch.

So how do we break her of this habit? We aren't sure. I'm more than willing to let her scream until she decides to go to sleep in her own bed, the problem is that she gets so upset that she throws up. The other night we didn't get to her before she hurled and had to dismantle her crib tent to wash it. What a mess. I have a feeling this is going to be a struggle until we can move into a home with our own bedroom.

Last night we suspected that Eve was not in any pain, but had decided that Faith was getting a good deal. She screamed and screamed until we brought her downstairs. She had a marvelous time chatting away. She got what she wanted, and you can't blame her. Individual attention is difficult to get in our family. Today she tried desperately to throw up at nap time. Thankfully she did not succeed. She kept spitting and coughing. Eventually she went to sleep. One small victory for Mommy.
